In 2016, the Sacramento SPCA began sharing shelter data with Shelter Animals Count, a standardized national database compiling animal shelter statistics for multiple species (live intakes, live outcomes, other/non-live outcomes, and animal counts) for more than 7,000 participating organizations.

Beginning January of 2025, the monthly Animal Intake/Outcome Report generated from Shelter Animals Count will be posted on our website.

Prior to 2025, the Sacramento SPCA relied on the Asilomar Accords for reporting of intakes and outcomes of animals in our care, which was the first standard way of reporting shelter statistics since its inception in 2004. 

In 2011, the national animal welfare organizations began a discussion around how to compile a complete picture of the animals entering and leaving shelters in the United States. The result was the formation of Shelter Animals Count.
