Alex with Theo & Charlie

If you’ve had the pleasure of meeting Alex, you’re not likely to forget her! Her contagious smile, spunky demeanor, and incredible devotion to animals make her an invaluable part of the Sacramento SPCA community.

Alex has been a volunteer for the SacSPCA for over 21 years and she has a number of specialties. She does Behavior Testing, assists with transfers from other shelters, and she is a long-time foster mom. Her foster specialty is moms and new puppies or dogs that are very shy and in need of some extra TLC.

What brought you to the Sacramento SPCA?

Alex says, “I have always loved animals. When my son went away to college, I found that I had time to give to the shelter as well as lots of love for the animals. I ended up meeting great friends and the staff at the shelter have always been so welcoming.  I FOUND A NEW HOME….and over the past 21 years have found that I would be lost without being a part of the SSPCA family.”

What do you love most about helping animals?

“I love helping animals because I believe we make a huge difference in their lives and I come away feeling that I did something good and fulfilling. People ask me all the time, “How can you work with animals that are sick or have been mistreated” and my answer is: they need you.

When I started at SacSPCA, I was a dog walker. I noticed that even walking a dog and talking to them, touching, or giving treats made a difference in the way the dog interacted with you. I am now in the Intake building and spend a lot of time sitting and holding a dog that has been mistreated or is fearful, old, or sick, trying to help them trust people.  When I see a dog that would hide in the back of their cage start running up to see you…….I know have made a difference.

I have three dogs from the SacSPCA: Charlie, a 4-year-old Terrier mix, Theo, a 16-year-old Doxie mix, and Princess, 15-year-old Terrier mix. I am also a Hospice Foster Mom for Homeward Bound Golden Retriever Rescue and have 2 dogs: Rose, a 6-year-old Staffy Boxer mix and Harvey, a 7-year-old Shepherd mix.”

Alex, thank you for all that you do! We are so honored to have you as a part of this community. You are noticed and appreciated!
